New Nuclear Digital Strategy: A Beginner’s Playbook
Main Article Content
Abstract
This paper describes a beginner's playbook, outlining some essential knowledge, strategies, and steps, to implement a digital strategy for new nuclear. It identifies critical pain points and lessons learned when managing complex project information, collaborating on engineering designs across multiple vendors, and adapting to rapid advancements in information technology. Derived from experiences gained during NB Power’s Advanced Reactor Development of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), this playbook serves as a practical guide for navigating the complexities of digital transformation.
A robust digital strategy involves aligning with organizational goals, engaging early with partners, conceptualizing a target end state, and developing a compelling business case. Key strategies and cautionary notes are discussed, addressing challenges related to people, process, and technology, and integrating organizational change management at every step with the support of champions and sponsors. Right-sizing initiatives are crucial for success, starting with an assessment of organizational maturity, failing small and failing fast through pilot demonstration, and never losing sight of user experience and feedback.
The goal of this playbook is to assist others embarking on a path to revive the nuclear industry through digital transformation.
