Abstract

ATS Industrial Automation is a frontrunner of nuclear automation innovation providing automated tools and factory wide solutions ranging from reactor refurbishments and decommissioning activities, to spearheading cutting-edge solutions for advanced reactors. With over 25 years’ experience in the nuclear industry, ATS is committed to the design and implementation of new Small Modular Reactor technologies aimed at providing sustainable, dependable, carbon-free energy. Our recent partnership with NuScale Power, LLC exemplifies this commitment and highlights our dedication to evolving alongside the industry by delivering innovative automation solutions.

The NuScale Modular Assembly Equipment Bolting (MAEB) system is instrumental for the disassembly and reassembly of the NuScale Power Module (NPM) fleets during reactor servicing. The system is submerged underwater and is responsible for the detensioning, removal, installation, and tensioning of the studs of the reactor pressure vessel, and containment vessel of the NPM. Comprised of 12 fully automated Manipulator Field Replaceable Unit (FRU) tools, the MAEB platform efficiently conducts the refueling tasks, minimizing outage time, and maximizing power production.

Responsible for the design, build, and testing of the MAEB's critical functionalities, ATS utilized a 1:1 scale proof of concept assembly. The operator experience (OPEX) in the tooling design, fabrication and testing phases of MAEB prototype are discussed in this paper.
