Integration of SMRs with a Potash Mine: Associated Considerations, Constraints and Implications
Main Article Content
Abstract
There is considerable interest from Potash Mining sector in co-locating small modular reactors (SMRs) at their site for their energy needs as result of the increased climate change awareness, ESG considerations and the increasing carbon tax in Canada.
Hatch has been involved in multiple engagements advising various Potash Mining clients on feasibility of deploying SMRs at their site. Building upon the work that has been performed to date, this paper presents the considerations, constraints and implications associated with co-locating SMRs with a potash mine. The paper focuses on considerations regarding siting an SMR with existing infrastructure, technical compatibility, regulatory aspects, emergency planning, implications on insurance and liability, security requirements, project economics and potential project structures. It aims at highlighting the critical factors and considerations for the feasibility of deploying SMRs at a potash mine.
