Abstract

Terrestrial Energy Inc. (TEI) is developing the Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR®) advanced reactor to supply heat directly to industrial facilities and/or generate electrical power. The IMSR is a Generation IV advanced small modular reactor (SMR) designed to meet modern codes and standards and achieve excellence in nuclear safety. As part of IMSR licensing engagement in Canada, TEI has requested the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) to conduct Phase 1 and Phase 2 pre-licensing Vendor Design Review (VDR) for the IMSR. TEI’s IMSR is the first advanced SMR to have successfully completed both phases of the CNSC’s VDR. The VDR involved a comprehensive review of the IMSR design covering 19 Focus Areas defined by the CNSC. Addressing these 19 VDR Focus Areas involved submission by TEI of hundreds of technical documents which allowed meaningful feedback from the CNSC staff and facilitated mitigation of regulatory risk. This successful VDR outcome supports TEI’s discussions with potential customers and future interactions with the nuclear regulator.
