The AtkinsRéalis Virtual CANDU Simulator Software
Main Article Content
Abstract
AtkinsRéalis is developing a Virtual CANDU Simulator, a bespoke software system to facilitate design visualization, non-operator training, human factors validation and stakeholder review activities. The Virtual CANDU Simulator is a distributed system, utilizing a full-scope plant simulator, custom developed communications layer, and custom developed Virtual CANDU Simulator client, built using a real-time game engine, to provide an accurate and interactive representation of a CANDU plant. Multiple users may simultaneously and remotely interact with virtual instruments on the Main Control Room (MCR) panels and interrogate plant devices statuses, while observing in real-time the simulated plant behavior. This extends the functionality of the full- scope simulator, by allowing users to work together within the simulated environment from remote locations and allows field operator interactions. This software can be practically and efficiently used for virtual walkthroughs of the plant with the designers, customers, and stakeholders. The Virtual CANDU Simulator has been successfully demonstrated to virtually integrate a proposed CANDU plant modification, which supported Human Factors Engineering (HFE), Constructability, Maintainability and Safety (COMS) evaluations early in the design process.
