Public Perception of SMRs in the Yukon: Engagement Approaches and Results
Main Article Content
Abstract
As part of investigating the feasibility of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in the Yukon, public and Indigenous outreach was conducted to investigate public perceptions to SMRs. Public perception of SMR risk research is most constructive when it explores beyond the binary of “for or against” nuclear development. Semi-structured interviews and focus groups of key informants, including First Nation representatives, government officials, mining representatives, Environmental Non-Governmental Organizations (ENGOs), and utilities were employed to gather data and identify major thematic concerns. This approach was also developed so that Indigenous communities could highlight important considerations necessary for the Yukon SMR Feasibility study. In this presentation, we briefly discuss the engagement process and results.
