CSA N293S1:21, Supplement No.1 to CSA N293-12: Fire protection for nuclear power plants (application to small modular reactors)
Main Article Content
Abstract
Emerging small modular reactor (SMR) technologies incorporate a broad range of output capacities, configurations, and operating staff requirements. The CSA N293S1:21 Supplement (“the Supplement”) was developed based on an urgent need identified by SMR proponents to clarify the application of CSA N293-12, Fire protection for nuclear power plants, (“the Standard”) to SMRs from a technology-neutral perspective focused on the relevant technical aspects of fire protection.
The Supplement provides direction regarding the application and adaptation of CSA N293 fire protection requirements to be considered and implemented with the emerging technologies related to SMRs. The Supplement provides the minimum fire protection requirements for the design, construction, commissioning, and operation of SMRs, including systems, structures and components that directly support the SMR facilities. The Supplement is organized and structured in the same format as the Standard and is written to be used in conjunction with the Standard. The Supplement clarifies the applicability of individual clauses in the Standard and provides modifications/alternatives to those clauses not applicable as-is.
This paper provides an overview of the development of the Supplement, highlights its key features, describes benefits to users and stakeholders, and outlines future updates planned to the Standard.
