Deployment of Small Modular Reactors in Saskatchewan
Main Article Content
Abstract
As Saskatchewan’s leading energy provider, Saskatchewan Power Corporation (SaskPower) maintains and operates a large fleet of electricity generation facilities. SaskPower is evaluating its long-term electricity supply strategy to meet a net-zero emissions target.
Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) are being assessed as a viable technology that can support the long-term goal of producing reliable power with zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. A recent feasibility study demonstrates the business case for deploying SMRs in Canada, highlighting their positive impact in producing clean energy, promoting innovation, and stimulating economic growth [1]. In March 2021, SaskPower’s Board of Directors approved the start of the planning phase for SMR project development work.
SaskPower is undergoing an effort to site a greenfield SMR facility, which has not been done before within Canada. Calian is supporting SaskPower to progress the key steps in the SMR planning phase. This paper will provide insight on the process and requirements that SaskPower is using to approach this effort.
