Imagining a Green Energy Future: Inspiring Youth Inclusion In Energy Transition Policy Decisions
Main Article Content
Abstract
This paper presents findings from a recently conducted online survey of respondents ranging in age from 13-54 to analyze emotional reactions surrounding the role of small modular reactors (SMRs) in energy system transition planning. Our analysis looks at the impact of age, gender, emotions and knowledge on support for SMRs as a low carbon energy option. Survey results on levels of worry about climate change and nuclear power along with previous knowledge of SMRs will be analyzed in relation to whether imagining a future with SMRs evokes positive or negative emotions in respondents. Our findings indicate a need for targeted and innovative engagement approaches to better reach key demographic groups, particularly young women who indicated a higher level of worry about climate change in our survey but a lower level of knowledge of and support for SMRs. This includes research into how social media can be a source of positive engagement.
