Build a Nucleus Simulation
Main Article Content
Abstract
The Chart of the Nuclides is a vital part of understanding nuclear science. Naturally, this visualization is mostly only familiar to those already in the nuclear science field. To encourage non-specialists to become familiar with the chart, we designed a simulation called Build a Nucleus, which is currently under development, with the University of Colorado’s PhET Interactive Simulations team. The PhET program creates engaging educational simulations on various math and science concepts. The Build a Nucleus simulation has a total of three screens. The first two scaffold conceptual understanding of half-life, radioactive decay, and stability, before showing the complete Chart of the Nuclides on the third screen. Due to the self-directed and interactive nature of all PhET simulations, anyone from everywhere around the world should be able to understand the fundamental inner workings of the nucleus, and in turn familiarize oneself with the Chart of the Nuclides. This tool can foster enthusiasm for learning about nuclear science and technology.
