Abstract

As part of the Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action (UMTRA) Project, Jacobs Engineering, under the direction of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), prepared conceptual designs for three former uranium processing sites that are on the Navajo Reservation. The objective of the design is to meet the EPA standards for long-term performance by consolidating the tailings and associated contaminated materials with a system of controls that would last 1000 years where reasonably achievable, and at least for 200 years. This report presents the problems and solutions associated with the designs at each site.
