Overview of the Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action Projects

Abstract

The United States Department of Energy (DOE) is conducting a uranium mill tailings management program to protect human populations and the environment, both now and in the future, from potential harmful exposure to containments contained in the tailings. The program is focused on isolating and stabilizing 24 inactive mill tailings piles and stabilizing 24 inactive mill tailings piles located at 22 locations with an estimated volume of 24,000,000 tonnes. This paper discusses remedial action in progress and outlines future plans.
