Transuranic Waste Transportation Trackign System

Abstract

The Department of Energy (DOE) currently plans to ship contact-handled transuranic waste from various DOE facilities throughout the continental United States to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in southeastern New Mexico. Approximately 100 vehicular shipments will be made per month. The use of a satellite-based system is presently being considered as an alternative means of tracking and communicating with these vehicles.
