Abstract

CANDU reactors in mid-life have two options for siting Tritium Removal Facility (TRF)

  • Stationary Option requiring permanent structures for each station.
  • Mobile Option with complete TRF that can be moved from station to station

In most existing CANDU stations, no provisions have been made to construct and operate a TRF. This makes the Stationary Option costly because space would have to be provided and new infrastructure installed. With appropriate seismic qualification and following the necessary codes and standards, the Mobile Option could be more cost effective if there were possibilities of sharing the unit with other stations in like position.
