Abstract

This abstract provides a summary of a work-in-progress on using the Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) based turbulence model to investigate inter sub-channel thermal mixing. The effect of coherent vortical structures formed in the gap regions of sub-channel geometries was studied numerically. The study was performed on a twin rectangular sub-channel geometry at a bulk Reynolds number of 250000 with 633850 grid points. It was found that the code could correctly predict the qualitative effects of the flow pulsation phenomena on the turbulent flow field. Currently improved mesh structure is designed to accurately predict the characteristics of the flow pulsation phenomena.
