Cable Condition Monitoring Using Non-Destructive and Non-Intrusive Fourier Transform Near Infrared (FT-NIR) Spectroscopy
Main Article Content
Abstract
The potential of using Fourier transform near infrared (FT-NIR) spectroscopy to monitor cable insulation condition and trend age-related degradation was investigated. The FT-NIR chemical finger-prints of PVC and XLPE cable insulation were significantly altered due to degradation resulting from irradiation and thermal aging. These spectral changes were correlated to critical property changes, i.e., average % elongation. The FT-NIR technique showed promise as an alternative to more traditional destructive chemical monitoring methods. The nuclear power industry is currently seeking cost-effective, non-destructive tools to support cable condition monitoring programs, now becoming recognized as essential to supporting plant life extensions and new builds.
