Abstract

The components of a large field-of-view gamma ray imaging system based on a multiwire proportional chamber and a pinhole collimator have been investigated both by analysis and experiment. The results of laboratory-scale testing indicate that the system response is calculable, and suggest that a full-scale prototype should be capable of spatial resolution better than 170 cm at 15 m from the source-plane and should possess a detection efficiency of the order of0.5 percent. This performance meets or exceeds the operational requirements suggested for such an imaging system.
