UNENE: An Integrated Network for Sustainable Knowledge Management

Abstract

Nuclear power technology is increasing in prominence as part of the global response to climate change. The recent initiatives in life extension mean that the technology will be used in Canada, as well as elsewhere, for many decades to come. This will require a diverse and robust approach to knowledge management and knowledge development. A university/industry partnership network is an important part of this effort. Industry’s needs for a renewing workforce of educated professionals will require repeated generations of graduates at bachelor, master and PhD levels. The UNENE model of distributed, coordinated R&D together with an adaptable, distance-learning oriented post-graduate education program for industry professionals, is designed to support long-term knowledge management. UNENE allows for university-based R&D activities that both contribute to maintaining and extending nuclear technology, and provide experiential post-graduate learning for professionals in the nuclear industry. This paper provides examples of both education and R&D underway at UNENE.
