Abstract

For some time, it looked as if Mexico was escaping from the world economic recession. Even during 1981, while most countries (developed or not) were reducing their economic growth and expectations, Mexico was still considering an accelerated rate of economic growth based mainly on the than expected income from oil exports. Due to reasons well known for all, the current situation is drastically different. With one of the largest foreign debts in the world, we have been obliged to take several measures of economic austerity reducing our economic growth for some time, and it is not clear how our economy will develop in the next years. The different national development plans are currently being reviewed but no specific quantitative goals have yet been defined for the long term because of the anomalous situation we are now suffering. Considering the letter, the purpose of this paper is mainly to discuss the current environment and possibilities for nuclear power in Mexico and not a specific nuclear power program, which is now under review.
