Nuclear Power Program in Indonesia - Status and Prospects

Abstract

The nuclear program in Indonesia is derived from the long range national development plan. The main aim of the development plan is to realize a just and prosperous society materially as well as spiritually within a united and democratic nation and to contribute to the world's peace


Since the development plan is multifaceted, the nuclear program has to consider various dimension such as: basic human needs, natural resources, science and technology for development and industrialization. Self reliance is the basic strategy in the implementation of the nuclear program, this means that we must develop strong scientific and technological manpower, research and development infrastructure and management and organization. It should be stressed of course that self reliance does not preclude mutually fruitful cooperation with developing and developed


nations in the peaceful uses of atomic energy. In this occasion the research and development plan and its implementation are touched upon. BATAN's centre at the PUSPIPTEK*) site is briefly described. The energy situation in Indonesia is discussed and the potential role of nuclear energy is also shown.
