The UK Regulatory View on Containment Requirements

Abstract
The regulation of nuclear installations in the United Kingdom is carried out by means of a licensing system administered and enforced by the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate which is part of the Health and Safety Executive. The UK regulatory system and the concept that responsibility for safety rests with the licensee are explained. The NII's assessment of the Sizewell B containment is discussed and a view given on the acceptability of existing plant without a containment.
