Abstract

MAPLE is a new class of research reactor developed by Atomic Energy of Canada Limited. It is a light-water-cooled reactor with-an open-chimney-in-pool arrangement. The primary heat transport system (PHTS)of a typical MAPLE consists of an inlet plenum, core, chimney, pool, heat exchanger, circulating pump and interconnecting piping. During normal operation, a small bypass flow

enters the bottom of the pool and combines with the core flow in the upper portion of the chimney to limit the height of the core jet. The combined bypass and-core flow exit from the chimney, via the suction outlets.
